Who knew? All week, my wife and I had been bemoaning the fact that we would be missing the Super Bowl on Sunday. I had checked the TV schedule online at the Telegraph (we get British TV via satellite), and it appeared that the game was available only on some special sports service of Sky. Which we didn’t have, of course.
Then, late last night, just before heading to bed, I turned on the TV, flipped to BBC One, and was stunned to discover that the Beeb was broadcasting the Super Bowl from Dallas, live! There were three guys in the BBC studio — two Brits and Tiki Barber, former New York Giants great. The actual game coverage was by Fox.
So, how do you assemble a Super Bowl party on zero-minutes’ notice in a French village? You simply call your wife to come down to the den, open up a bag of salted nuts, crack a bottle of Bergerac blanc sec, and watch the game.
Until 4:08 this morning.
Next year, we’ll be better prepared. For one thing, we’ll make sure we have nothing planned for the Monday after the Super Bowl!
